Clark was proving herself yet again to be a brilliant asset to the Meropis expedition as she mastered the ancient control panel. Of course, to an ancient it was as simple as a T.V remote but add ten thousand years and a significant language barrier and Evans thought Clark should be given her due.
"It requires us to put it up or down, besides the shield only goes to where it was, kind of like an inside locking door, we could raise it again to keep the Dinosaurs out?" Elly Clark asked. As they considered it, and Maggie contributed something that Dominic filtered out, Ahrima offered her thoughts,
"To raise the field would be to our tactical advantage. It would limit the number of potential threats to only what lies within the compound. Likewise, if we receive visitors, our presence here would not be readily announced should we... leave it as we found it."
Captain looked to Major Eastlyn, who simply nodded and gestured an upward thumb. Evans looked back at Clark who had gotten the message. He agreed that it might be a good idea to try and keep any unwanted interruptions to a minimum while they worked.
The team began to make their way up the fairly narrow tunnel that presumably led to the ancient lab they sought. As they trudged on Evans, voiced a thought that had been bugging him.
"Has anybody figured out, 'why Dinosaurs?' I mean it seems a little odd doesn't it, they must have been placed here." Once the tunnel began to open up into a larger cave network, a few gasps could be heard. Dominic let out a slow whistle as he glanced up and around at the rock formations, millions and millions of years of magnesium-rich calcium weakened by trickling rainwater had created a glistening array of stalactites and stalagmites.
"You know I took a cave tour once on shore leave back in England and they would often say that rock such as this is living." He said to nobody in particular, "I mean just think about it, out here on the edge of space. Millions of years old, protecting the ancient lab from the ravages of time even as it slowly entombs it. It's almost beautiful. Shame we've got a job do to and, ya'know, aliens to kills." The end of his sentence attracted a stifled giggle from Eastlyn, Evans would chalk that up as a 'win'.
Ahrima was the first to step through a smaller archway into the main chamber and the others quickly filtered in behind her. This had to be the ancient lab. The chamber was lit by a warm glow, and populated by wild ivy and weeds that had found their way into the cave network and began to make a life for themselves. The air felt still to Dominic, almost preserved in a way, this far into the caves the sea salt was less likely to present an issue. There was a row of darkened computer terminals set against the far wall. Opposite that and beside the team was what appeared to be a workshop. Parts of some sort of larger machine had been scattered across a desk, presumably discarded as junk by the lab's previous occupant. Even as the team proceeded toward the computers, they came to life.
"Well, looks like one of us is a natural carrier. Welcome back." Dom said with raised eyebrows as the lab slowly powered to life. Retrieving a tablet and a cable from inside his flack jacket he ordered, "All right, let's get to work. Clark, what do you need us to do to speed this up?"
