Here at SG:M we are all for getting stuck in and having fun. However, we've got to have some ground rules in order for Meropis to work properly so here they are!
1. Enjoy yourself. I've put this rule at the top because... what is the point in the site if it's not fun!
2. Here at Meropis, we will not tolerate blatant offensiveness. Including but not limited to offensive characteristics for your character e.g racism, intolerance, extreme deviance, homophobia etc. This includes stating or demonstrating this behaviour and claiming it to be as part of the story. We politely request that any love scenes remain clean or "behind closed doors" or via private messages.
3. Always spell check! Quickly review your posts before you hit the submit button. It really helps tidy things up and make for an easier read. Of course with words like "Meropis" and your character names that cannot be helped, but basic spelling is pretty essential.
4. Respect your fellow members. Abuse or bullying of any kind WILL NOT be tolerated. As said before, this is a friendly site and will remain as such. If you have a personal problem with another member please seek advice from an admin.
5. HOW TO PLAY. Posting Structure. Please use bold text in quotes when your character is talking and italics when another character is speaking. It helps distinguish between characters, especially to those new to the site. Always make sure you put your location with every post. A simple bold tag line at the top helps things along. You do not always need to put the galaxy in the tags, be logical. Examples (note the ship tag needs more detail as the board/ship is always moving):
Milky Way Galaxy
En Route To Earth
BC-304 Sun Tzu
Infirmary
James entered the infirmary cautiously....
Or another example...
Triangulum Galaxy
Meropis
Gate Room
General Conway stood with his back to the Stargate, taking in his surroundings...
Following this you will then usually react to the other members of your thread/posting group before dictating what actions your character takes, bearing in mind the overall mission objective and any nearby enemies!
6. Please try to keep the foul language out. This is a family friendly site and it will remain as such. There are filters on foul language but if you go out of your way to get around them we will take appropriate action. After all, they don't do it in the TV series, so why do it here
7. Please also try to keep OOC (out of character) chat to a minimum in the actual threads, we have OOC boards and other places such as the chat box or skype where you can discuss ideas and general "things".
8. HOW TO PLAY. No "God Modding" as its called is allowed. If your character gets shot, for example, don't make them continue on unharmed and defeat an entire legion of warriors. You are not a god and your characters are not invincible. This rule includes suddenly bringing in an army of enemy soldiers, wiping out a platoon of NPC with a knife, equipping yourself with far too many weapons or even producing an unexplained power weapon out of nowhere. Sometimes one side or the other is supposed to have the upper hand for story purposes. Forum staff read every single post and the plot twist events are there for a reason. If a plot twist means you get shot, stick with it - it might mean you end up saving the day in a few posts time.
9. Please do not act or speak on behalf of other people's characters without prior permission. It is their character, not yours. When using Stargate characters it is essential to keep to their character, don't have Jack O'Neill gaining a PHD by studying ancient mythology etc.
10. Extra characters are allowed. You can have as many as you think you can manage*. Try to stick to about two as you never know when "real life" calls and you may suddenly find you don't have as much time as you thought, which could cause a few issues for other role players you are engaging with.
10a. In addition, and to avoid delving into any risky territory, all characters must be aged at least 18.
10b. *Excluding aliens. We have decided to limit the number of alien characters, whether native or not, to two per person. This is just to make sure we have a decent balance of SG personnel to alien guests, just like in the T.V show.
10c. An upper limit of 2 (TWO) characters that were part of the original expedition will be instituted. This can either be a returning member remaking their old characters, or new members inserting their character in the original story (Providing it makes sense for them to have been part of the OE. After all, that was 8 years ago in-character.)
11. No Stargate, Stargate Universe or Stargate Atlantis main or sub-plot characters may be used as characters or as Avatars (face claim). It helps keep the place original and helps admins with episode ideas and Stargate link-ins. Stargate or Stargate Atlantis characters may be used in posts but please wait until an admin or a plot twist has done so rather than randomly introduce them. We may allow extras from the TV series as they make good avatars but please run this by a member of admin staff first.
12. Please use only the weapons and technology listed in the Meropis files and those seen on the TV series. No ancient technology may be used (bar the normal life-signs scanners and puddle jumpers etc seen in Atlantis) unless it has been introduced as part of the story. The admins will be introducing exciting new technologies at the right time/place in missions and don't want the excitement of developments such as this to be pre-empted too early.
13. HOW TO PLAY. How often do I need to post? We all like to try and post regularly but we want this to be a relaxed and informal hobby environment. If you can't get online to post, don't worry, as long as you let us know (see LOA below). We will try to match up player's posting speeds with each other each episode to make it all flow a little easier.
- If you know you're going to be unable to post for a period of a week or more please let us know in the official LOA (Leave of Absence) thread located in the General Discussion board. It's just so we know not to delete your character.
- If you haven't posted or updated us as to your LOA in 14 days we reserve the right to either kill or disable your character in due course. Your profile will be set as inactive.
Not wanting to sound like the iron fist of the law, but we have to state what our intentions are if rules are contravened deliberately and consistently. If you break them you may be warned. If you seriously or repeatedly break the rules your warning level will go up. Once your warning level reaches 100% (only you and admin staff can see it in the side bar under your name), your character could be deleted. If you come back and it happens again, you will face being banned from the site altogether. This is just a cover-all disclaimer to protect the role playing community from trolls and bullies.
That, my friends, is your lot. Just stick to these and the system works! If you are just joining up, simply fill out the recruitment form to create your character in the Personnel Files board and wait to be approved by a member of staff. We do check regularly and we realise new players are keen to get stuck in so we prioritise new applications.
Have fun!
