Gate Ops
Meropis
[Joint post with Dominic Evans]
Still nursing a broken left arm, complete with a sling, the Expedition leader Brigadier General Jason Conway had signed the tablet and handed the device back over to the technician. It was canteen day, everyone's favorite day when it came around. As part of the expedition pay deal all personnel were allocated an allowance on top of their salary to order in home comforts along with the usual food run. Jason was looking forward to his cigar and glass of whisky back on the balcony. He turned to leave gate ops, heading down the corridor at a slow amble and letting the thoughts drift in and out of his mind. The Sun Tzu was due to commence it's five week hyper drive journey back to Earth today and that meant the city would be back down to one zero point module powering it. The support ship had been in combat and was due for a crew change, and being Chinese funded this meant she would land somewhere in China for a full inspection, any repairs required and most of the crew would be replaced by Chinese staff. Conway reflected on the energy quandary, they had been running on both the city's own ZPM and the one from the Sun Tzu for the past few weeks, which meant regular wormholes straight to Earth. Dr. Black had explained to him three times now that because Meropis was completely different to Atlantis, it required two ZPMs to establish a wormhole to the Milky Way. Of course, Earth could still dial in and send supplies as they had the use of their own ZPM but a one way phone call isn't much use when you need it.
There had also been a significant change in the personnel recently while the wormhole from Triangulum could be established. Those required to help establish a base had returned home and rotated around for long-term military and civilian expedition members. Homeworld command had authorized Meropis to operate without a support ship for the time being. They had been without incident for just over two months now and the initial conflict on arrival could easily be defended against once more using the city's drones if needed. Jason rounded the corner toward his office and gave way to a team of scientists geared up for an excursion out on the planet surface. In any case, he thought, if long range sensors detected an incoming ship they could cloak the city as they did before and as Atlantis had managed to do successfully for years. He passed Warrant Officer Dominic Evans in the hallway, they saluted each other accordingly,
"General! Nervous about the lack of a ship for three and a half months?"
"I can't say I'm happy about it but it is what it is Evans. In any case the Hammond is on Earth defense and the Odyssey has been tied up recently with some sort of classified operation. With The Sun Tzu being prioritized for us, The Daedalus and The Apollo are still Earth bound for repairs after the incident with the Wraith Super-Hive last year."
Dominic Evans shook his head and his British accent rang out again,
"Tough break but I suppose they trust us enough not to mess this one up, did you hear anything more about Atlantis?"
"Last I heard there were plans to power her up again and move her under cloak to the moon. From there the Earth gate would be superseded and private companies would be responsible for ferrying of personnel back and forth."
Jason tried to hide how unimpressed he was with this, not only did it seem like a waste of the Earth Stargate but the financial implications alone would be enormous. Dominic bit his tongue as sarcastic comments around a Nazi moon base came to mind, Conway wasn't of the kind of rank that you make jokes in front of.
"Unfortunately, it seems a few key players have their hats in their hands and are making a stand at Homeworld Command."
"Ah, the full circle." Remarked Dominic, "It starts with politics and it ends with politics."
"Apparently so, anyway, I'll catch up with you later."
With that the pair saluted each other again in rank order and Dominic made his way down towards Gate Ops. They may be from completely different forces from completely different nations but the "united" in united nations really pulled through this far from home. The General entered his office and sighed at the stack of papers on his desk, not everything was digital yet it seemed. Conway settled in for just another day at the office.
