Puddle Jumpers
Alteran Gateships, dubbed puddle jumpers by the Tau'ri, are small spacecraft created by the Ancients themselves. Several of these ships were discovered in various hangars in Atlantis, and are used by the Atlantis Expedition. Several more were later discovered in Meropis, and are subsequently used by the Meropis Expedition. Gateships have retractable engines which allows them to fly through Stargates, as well as powerful Ancient drone weapons, shield and cloaking technology. They are equipped with a neural interface and the ATA gene is required to successfully activate and pilot the ship.
The name "puddle jumper", is a pun on the ship's ability to travel through Stargate event horizons, which obviously visually resemble pools of water. The name was coined by (back then Major) John Sheppard of the Atlantis Expedition, an experienced pilot, who found a serendipitous double meaning when describing the craft.
Technical specifications
Length: 8 meters
Height/depth: 4.7 meters
Engine units: 2 Drive pods
Hyperdrive System: Limited interstellar (Developed by Rodney McKay - As part of an IOA Review, also later to be added to Meropis Jumpers)
Power plant: Rechargeable power core
Shielding: Converted from cloak (Developed by the Atlantis Expedition, also later added to Meropis Jumpers)
Sensor Systems: Ancient sensor array
Targeting Systems: Mental
Control Systems: Control chair
Navigation System Ancient star map
Avionics: Mental
Countermeasures: Cloaking device
Armament: 6 Drone weapons
