Jaya was standing off to the side, a bit nervously. She took a plate, though, and filled it with some of her Raita, Biryani, and some vegetables from a tray. She looked at the Chocolate that Elly Clark had. She could go for some chocolate. Or lots of it, really. She stood there, awkwardly, and ate, just watching the others interact.
After a moment, the tall, blonde, rather fit Jaffa female approached her. Oh, no, what should she do? What DID she do?! She thought for a moment. One should always have a good reason when a senior officer asked you a question. Shoot, the best she could come up with was "yes, ma'am." She'd sound like a TOTAL idiot.
But the woman's words surprised her.
Your foot attire is... uniquely fashionable, Jaya looked down at her tie-dyed, teddy bear slippers, and then back at the woman.
Thank you. I am from California; I am told we do things differently there. They were a present from my oldest sister when I completed boot camp and went to my first posting. Pinky likes things that are colorful. Jaya wondered if she should explain that Pinky was her eldest sister's nickname, a name given to her by her father's parents. As the first Bakshi child, it was a nickname intended to mean "good health" in Hindu. Then, Jaya pointed to Ahrima's hair.
I love your hairstyle. Braids are very popular in Indian culture. Can you fix mine like that? She asked. She poured herself some grape soda, and then looked to Ahrima again. This party is pretty happening. Would you like some grape soda? Jaya spoke to the woman as if she were speaking to any other person-the aliens never bothered her much. Jaya was used to being different, given that she was Hindu, Indian, and questioning.
