“What DOES NCIS do, exactly?!” Ryan laughed. “Fiona, you have no idea how many times I get asked that. Though at least they made a show about it, so at least we have something to reference!” He laughed again. “We are typically responsible for investigating actual, suspected, or alleged offense, usually felony level crimes as well as a myriad of other crimes, like terrorism, defection, etc. for the Department of the Navy.” Ryan answered, though he didn’t want to bore her with anything. "It can be quiet interesting. I guess I have fun." He took a sip of his coffee and smiled happily, enjoying the food and the company.
He listened as she relayed to him her growing up in Ireland. The special security officer in him wanted to ask how much of a nightmare that had been to get her clearance, but knowing where they were, it wasn’t the best place to be talking about such thing. When Fiona had gotten to the part about how her uncle had almost lost the farm, Ryan felt incredibly guilty. “I’m…sorry, I didn’t mean to bring up any bad memories.” He said, not knowing what else to say. He knew it must have been tough, and he felt bad for bringing up the question. Come Ryan, stay away from touchy subjects.
Though her response to his comment about some of his Marines buddies both excited and terrified him. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to have another child. Max is getting old enough that he doesn't need me anymore, and it's hard to raise an only child to not be selfish sometimes. Max has been in daycare for years, but at home, it's just him, and he gets all the toys, all the food, and all of Mummy's attention. In the instant Ryan sat thinking to respond a multitude of thoughts rushed through his head. “Why would she bring up having more kids on the first date? Is this a date? Does this mean there might be a future? Or is she just speaking absently? Maybe she is trying to scare you off? How do you feel about having kids?” Thoughts just continued to rush through Ryan’s minds as to took a sip of coffee to collect himself. “Quiet down inner self. One step at a time, we will cross that bridge when it comes.” He thought. “I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but I can only imagine how difficult it must be.” HE said in regards to Max. “Though, I am sure you are doing an amazing job, he seems like a really good boy. You do seem pretty amazing to me.” He said, though only just realizing what had slipped out.
“How long have you been working for the bureau or living in DC?” Ryan asked, hoping to change the subject a bit. Not because he was nervous about where that conversation could go, just he was also trying to quiet his inner self.
