I just finished my appointment with Aear Charter regarding his "magical" abilities. We spoke in detail about what we could do and somewhat about the laws regarding magic and I am fairly certain that the Meowtian isn't a security or health risk. His people and he can manipulate DNA, but he said that is highly illegal and I believe he wouldn't use it on anyone. I am not sure if you are a Star Wars fan, with that being said I do believe the force to which they spoke, is what this is Mana is that allows them to use their magical abilities. He is what I'd call a Jedi with a tail and cat-like appearance and without a light saber... Back to the real world, as far as I can tell, his abilities have no side effects on the human population. I am not qualified to know for sure, since we don't cover magic or aliens in medical school but from research and from talking with him he will be fine being around us and Meropis. Dr. West,

Thank you very kindly for your report on Aear, I have just been reviewing the medical notes that have slipped across my desk this morning. It is reassuring to know that Mr. Charter poses no threat to our expedition, and to date he has proven a useful ally with a great insight into advanced technology. We will keep the A.M.F fields running nonetheless, following the recent incident with the Koan - we can't afford to be too careful.

Dr. Black has theorized that the Meowtians are an indirect result of the ancient Lilith's experimentation with lower life forms and artificial ascension. It is interesting to bear this in mind and read your notes on what Aear calls 'magic' and 'mana'. I will have Captain Kelly Miller sit down and talk to him about the Meowtian laws, with our diplomat Francessca Luks coming and going, it could be very useful to gain an insight into their political set up.

Have you ensured that Aear is of no health risk to HIMSELF? I am concerned over the use of his abilities recently to defend himself and other members of our expedition and the subsequent toll it took on the creature - said DNA manipulating you informed me about. Am I right in understanding that he shape changes into a large version of a domesticated cat? I would also be interested to understand the consequences of what would occur if he blocked the DNA recovery process, would he die for example? Can we safeguard and protect him from this happening?

We'll keep an eye on the little tiger, he sure seems keen to assist Glavish, Clark and co with their ancient research which is helping our turnaround times and deadlines no end. Check in with me soon and I look forward to hearing from you Doc.

General,

I only had a brief talk with him as I was more concerned with our people more so than I was on the effects it could have on him. I would suspect that if he puts too much strain on himself and overuses his abilities then he could definitely cause himself harm and possible kill himself in doing so. From what I heard he could change himself into a humanoid cat-like being, but I believe that is more of a defensive action than anything. I am not sure exactly what effects that would have on him either, its in his DNA, I would guess that it would be fine for a short time, but I can't speculate on what would happen afterwards.

He told me that he can't use his powers right now, I am not sure why. Maybe its just a recovery time from using his powers before? Maybe there is some time you have to wait before being able to use your magic to protect them from killing themselves or causing permanent injury, that would be my best guess on his "magical" powers, I would guess he could use his magic powers not because its magic but because of the tests performed on them by the ancient. We saw Doctor McKay having some pretty amazing abilities from evolving from the ancient gene manipulation machine. My best guess would be that they have evolved enough to be able to use some of these powers from physiological evolution/gene manipulation. We also know that like when Doctor McKay used the ancient personal shield that it became ineffective to save his life, I would assume these abilities are a safeguard as well.

The only way you could safeguard him would be if he never used his powers, but even that could have some effect on him. I am way out of my ball park with this, all I could do is guess and assume, things I don't usually do.
