Gate Ops
Meropis
The night shift had just logged on duty, a skeleton crew would usually suffice, but others were always on standby if they were needed. Evening may be setting on Meropis, but on other planets in the Triangulum Galaxy dawn was just approaching. The day team were just about to clock off and were heading back to their quarters. General Conway had busied himself with one-to-one meetings for most of the day and had decided that now was a good time to take one last sweep through and make sure everybody was all well and good before handing over to the night's commanding officer.
"Karasnov! How goes it?" He said, smiling at the middle aged Russian who was just getting comfortable at one of the comm's workstations within the upper floor office. She nodded an all is well to the expedition commander.
It was just as well that he had decided to pass through. Klaxons began to sound obnoxiously and warning lights installed above the ancient consoles were flashing a dangerous rapid red.
"Unscheduled off-world activation!" Karasnov called out in her thick Russian accent. Conway briskly paced to the forefront of the office just in time to see the Stargate's event horizon balloon out into the 'gate room. "Shields up" he ordered, which was instantly complied with as per policy, an electric film shimmered over the open wormhole. A few incredibly tense seconds passed as nothing came through. The only thing that broke the silence was the tapping of quick fingers on keyboards, analyzing the signals and radiation coming through. The quiet was broken,
"Sir, detecting an incoming communication channel."
"Bring it up on screen." He ordered, looking at the overhead monitors.
