Episode Four: Team Baker

"Will you shut the hell up!" Rang Glavish's voice through the comms network. Team Baker remained none-the-wiser as to what was going on with their counterparts elsewhere in the forest.
"Charming!" Chimed Dr. Black. With eyebrows still raised in offense, he turned to the team around him who had been eagerly assembled to get a look at the tablet device Michael was using to control the overhead drone. He snapped his fingers in the air,
"I have a plan!" He typed a series of commands into the tablet, "Hopefully, the signal range on these little 'GlavNet' devices is good enough to reach... Ah yes, now according to this, the drone happens to be hovering nearer to Team Able than to us..." More commands were typed in as quickly as he could manage, "I remember seeing a camera mounted to the drone so if I just maneuver the drone like so..." tap, tap, tap, "and connect to the down link feed like this... Here... We.. Go! There!" An image sprung up on the tablet, Michael made sure everyone could see.

The video feed was choppy at best, with a slow frame rate and in black and white, but it was displaying a very unusual scene. Team Able seemed to have their weapons raised and pointed at a lone figure carrying a spear-like object. All of a sudden the scene changed. The lone figure turned into a blur, there was a movement and one of the marines vanished, another seemed to be thrown backward with some force. Bright lights began to flash from the muzzles of the guns,
"Oh no, this is not good..." Stated Michael. The lone figure seemed to surround themselves with a force shield of sorts, they could see a member of the surrounding group do the same, identifying Captain Jones and Arson. An energy blast disrupted the image for a moment before it returned to a completely different scene. The lone figure was doing something with the spear device, a bright flash blinded the camera. The last image was Team Able by themselves, the lone figure having vanished, leaving behind a circular scorch mark on the ground. The drone crashed. "Signal Lost" was displaying on the tablet screen. Dr. Black sighed and replaced the tablet within his side pocket. Turning back to the team he ventured an obvious conclusion,
"It seems we aren't the only ones in pursuit of this ancient lab. I think we'd better pick up the pace... We've now only got short-wave radio contact with Team Able if that." He set off again into the forest, following the path that Maccafferty had suggested.

Around a quarter of an hour later, the initial map that Michael had produced indicated they were getting close to the ancient lab. Until Dr. Black stopped dead in his tracks... The hitherto silent Michael Cassidy had made a noise. Dr. Black looked up,
"Ah... That looks interesting..."

Aear was finishing setting another trap. He was tying a vine to a nearby tree across the track as a tripwire of sorts. Dangling above was a massive log he'd hauled up into the canopy. Careful not to set it off prematurely he stepped over his trap and moved on. He had a couple more traps in mind as he walked for another while before deciding to set his next. He collected dozens of sticks and sharpened their ends with his teeth and claws. Eventually he'd finished setting up another tripwire to fire a whole bunch of makeshift arrows at his pursuer.

Setting these traps was hard unrelenting work and he was already exhausted long before he'd arrived on whatever rock this was. Slowly making his way into the lab he found himself at a central console of some kind. He turned around and looked behind him seeing two entrances on either side. His mind playing tricks on him with his exhaustion, or perhaps instinct, he headed to the entrance he hadn't come in through. Cyleo. he commanded as a mana cartridge was ejected from his right arm. Too tired to catch Aear picked it up once it had settled and using his partners mechanical strength shoved it into the wall. He left his hand on the cartridge for a moment. He needed to cast a spell to finish the trap, a white magic circle appeared on the wall for a moment as Aear placed a proximity detonation spell. He walked slowly back to the console and slumped to sit beside it.

It wasn't long however till he heard and felt the explosion that his pursuer had walked into. Seeing the dust from the entrance collapsing he figured he'd gotten whoever they'd sent after him and finally allowed his body to rest slipping of of the console to rest. [Diffusion and recovery form] chimed his arm as Aear's body glowed and shrank into his cat like recovery form his device taking form in a collar and pendant.

Síobhian had remained near to the back of the group as they pressed on through the jungle and once or twice she found herself falling behind the group having to perform a little run to keep up. It was times like this she missed not taking back up the dancing. She had done a little bit of field work that involved going to a jungle in a nice shiny helicopter and a local hotel, there had also been the time she had to the moors when a number of animals had falling ill, but this was something she was't use to and not wanting to get use to it was not going to make a difference at this point as she was stuck here. So here she was she taught to herself out of her medical lad waiting for something of interest to jump at her and as she taught that she realised she didn't want anything to jump out. She had dealt with diseases that with one cough or sneeze could destroy a civilization and who knows may be one did at one point in history. Now she was walking in dirt acting like a simple medic and not a doctor. She tried to reasure herself it could be worse but nothing sprang to mind, so of she went with her medical bag in hand and second on her back for taking samples. Every once in a while she'd talk slowly reassuring herself all was ok, her mind was beginning to play tricks on her and slowly her voice became louder.

" Nothing dangerous, all ok, just an empty tree, nothing dangerous. "

She stood behind Fiona trying to figure what was happening, it was that moment Dr Black broke the silence.

" Ah... That looks interesting ."

Síobhian response was quick hoping that they had finally reached there target ," What is it, did we make it, please tell me were here." As she stood there she shifted her weight to one side of her body, shifting from foot to the other foot being afraid to lean on a tree. Her belief in herself with no one being as skilled as her to treat her was a another reason she avoided touching anything. With out given him a second she spoke again. " Well what is it ?".

Fee stood a bit further back from the other two men; slightly closer to Dr. Kells, but not TOO close. She was aware that she had quite a bit of alien animal blood on her, mostly near the bottom of her leggings. Thank goodness she was wearing rubber shoes, and heavy socks. The planetary air here was very close to the weather of the UK, and even in Boston in the autumn, wet, rainy, and smelling of trees and things. She was from just outside of Dublin, and her town was mostly farms and Bogtrotters resettled in the "new" North to preserve thier lineage to the UK, since South Ireland was it's own republic now.

She watched the figures on Dr. Black's tablet, stamping her foot in impatience. The technology out here was so slow-that would be her first item of business-improve the speed of whatever sort of intranet she could Macgyver together. She winced as she saw what appeared to be explosions and several of the Miltary personnel fall to the ground. She sucked in air.

Oh no, this is not good... No sh*t. She looked at the man, and just nodded in agreement, then to Torsten, who might have a better plan, as scientist, she knew, weren't exactly known for thier battle strategies. On the other hand, she could plan and implement a new operating system, but she had a feeling that aliens wouldn't necessarily respond to binary codes.

What fresh hell is this? she asked again. She sighed, and followed the team off in the direction that Dr. Black went, as per her original suggestion. Fee wanted to change her mind, and go ahead, to the other side of the bloody planet, but she knew that would not be tolerated, so she kept her mouth shut and shuffled along.

They stopped after a short time, and Dr. Black looked at a map.

Ah... That looks interesting... She stopped her work on her tablet-only Fee would get bored with walking and decide to make a few codes to make her tablet, which she called Earheart, to work faster. She looked up, too. Dr. Kells spoke.

What is it, did we make it, please tell me were here....well what is it? Fiona spoke before Michael could.

'Tis just there, in the tree. Another trap. But this one I don't know...I wanted to harass me uncles, not actuall kill them.

"'Tis just there, in the tree. Another trap. But this one I don't know...I wanted to harass me uncles, not actually kill them." Maccafferty explained, she pointed up to a swinging log type mechanism held together by rope and vines. It was crudely built in a hurry it seemed, but nonetheless potentially deadly if you stood in the wrong place. Dr. Black carefully side-stepped the trigger, the hairs on the back of his neck starting to stand up. Somebody really didn't want them to get to this lab. Somebody sharing this very planet with them.
"Best we press on..." He said in a calm, flat voice, trying not to give anything away.

It wasn't much longer, another minute or so, until they reached the lab. At first the thick undergrowth gave away nothing and only proved difficult to drudge through. Then the trees began to thin and Dr Black, keen to make sure he was the first one to reach it, pressed on ahead. There wasn't much too it that gave the lab away. Like the ancient city of Meropis, most of the complex seemed to have been buried over time. The East entrance stuck out in front of them, gleaming metal reflecting the mid-day sunlight. The door was perhaps big enough for two abreast to enter and was framed in a solid titanium like structure. The only giveaway that it still worked was the small ancient sensor at about waist height, it illuminated the surrounding metalwork with a dim glow indicating it was still connected to a power source.

Michael stopped just short of the door and looked it up and down. He experimentally swiped his hand over the sensor... Nothing happened. He'd not yet heard from Team Able, so had to assume he was the first. With a child-like grin he turned to the group behind him,
"Looks like we win!" Turning back to the door his tone changed to that of a puzzled man, "Now, if only I knew how to open this thing." Perhaps the power was off? Michael set about trying to wedge his fingers into the gap where the two sides of the door met, hoping that prying it open was the answer.

Fee waited for Michael to give her orders.

Best we press on... Fee raised an eyebrow. What if what was out there was a cannibal of some kind, though?! Was it safe? She sighed deeply, and looked to Siobhan, then shrugged and pressed on. Luckily, it was closer than she'd imagined, and they were there momentarily.

Michael turned back to them, and with a child-like grin, spoke aloud.

Looks like we win...Now, if only I knew how to open this thing. Fee sighed loudly.

Boys! Let me see, mayhaps the power is out... She, too, touched the door, but it opened for her. She looked to Michael, surprised.

I don't know....you must've loosened something. She shrugged, and looked to the others. She led the way in, to a dark, dank room. She pulled out her tablet, and then shone the light into the center of the room. She noted a rudimentary light switch, and crossed to it, flipping it UP. The room then barely lit up; a small lightbulb was hung up, the work of a previous visitor, surely.

Smells funny in here. I will take the main console. We need some Marines in here; this place creeps me out. She sighed, and fished her flashlight out of her pocket. Hopefully, someone would take the charge to find some more light...or she could, after she got the computers up and running.

We'll need more light; I can wire something in a bit, but this system is going to fight me. Michaels? She indicated the computers so the two men could assist her. Poor Doc Kells was left on her own.

Síobhian remained at the back of the group as they finally continued there track to there unknown location. The jungle was all the same in her eyes, she saw little difference in any part of it and as much as she tried she couldn't see the difference. As they approached what looked like there journeys end, the chance of comfort was little and far from expected. The only thing she could hope for was something of interest to her fancy and not some new energy source or weapons. Something in her field of medicine, that would give her more insight to possible diseases and cures. As for now she felt like a third wheel, even more when they hit a power problem and out of her league all together.
As Fiona looked over the power problem, Síobhian wondered long this boredom would take place and if Fiona could manage to restart the power. It was that moment she decide to take her interest elsewhere and to a rock. She took her bag off and rested it upone a bolder. Taking out a number of glass viles she took out gloves and her small equipment to take some samples. As the rest worked towards power, Síobhian got to work, lifting the rock alien insects in her view went in all directions, one looking like it was a crossed breed with a worm and beetle with red strips took her fancy as she gentle used her tweesers to pull it back to the surfaces preventing it from tying to bury it's self in to the ground. She hadn't wanted to use the tweesers but she saw no chance in hell of her touching it and if it died all the better. If it was of interest after study she'd come back or she'd send someone back to gather more. As they continued to try to turn on the power Síobhian began to fill up her viles with insects and plants of different range with in reach all the while speaking to her victims.

" Your ugly, you'll do,

"Have you already so just F away with yourself."

" I wonder how you taste.

As quickly as she had unpacked all her viles, she had packed them up again and ready to go or wait around.

Aear's flicked as he heard the doors open once again, he'd overridden the controls to let him in with his and Cyleo's nanites since it didn't seem to be working yet was still powered. Of course they wandered in just as his final trap activated hurling a number of sharp sticks at them.

Aear wiggled in his sleep aware of every sound but not able to force himself to awaken let alone get back to his normal form and fight off his new pursuers. Great more hunters... he thought unaware that Fee had tasted his blood and could now hear his thoughts through his nanites. He was vaguely aware of laying on something hard and almost buttony. Was he sleeping on the console? Magic did his head in sometimes not always doing what you wanted it to do.

"Boys! Let me see, mayhaps the power is out..."
Fee effortlessly opened the door after it obeyed her hand swipe, she gave the good doctor a sweet smile and stepped on through first.
"I don't know....you must've loosened something." Michael wanted to say something, he glared at her, and then at his hand, and then back to her. Of course, bloody ancient genes. He looked at the other Michael, Cassidy, who was standing in front of the entrance looking at the door mechanism and at Doctor Black,
"Well go on then! What are you waiting for!" He gestured inwards before thrusting his hands into his trouser pockets. He really needed to look in to getting that gene therapy done, and properly at that!

The team trundled down the small, narrow staircase and stepped into the underground lab, Fee had already managed to find something resembling a light switch. The bulb barely illuminated the room but it would be enough to start work with until they could fly over some proper working lights, Michael thought. He surveyed his surroundings, the shadows pooling in the corners and down the sides of the various ancient machines. The room was no bigger than the Meropis control room back in the city, and appeared to have similar technology lining the walls. Across the far side of the lab, opposite the staircase they'd entered on, Michael spied a closed bulkhead door. Something worth investigating in due course.

Fee had set to work on one of the terminals,
"We'll need more light; I can wire something in a bit, but this system is going to fight me. Michaels?" She asked. Dr. Black knew when it was his time to shine. He confidentially strode forward, eager to get there ahead of Cassidy and... Ducked.
"BLOODY HELL!" His cry echoed around the room, turning all heads in his direction. Evidently he had tripped something, a dozen sharpened sticks had just emerged from a darkened corner at about head height with a tell-tale whistling sound. Michael had just about moved in time as a few of them embedded themselves in the wall behind him. He bent down to pick one of the mini spears up, examining it and turning it over in his hands.
"This looks like it wasn't made all that long ago you know..." He slowly looked up and made eye contact with Fee and then with the soldier, Ackermann. He slowly placed the item on the floor next to him as the soldiers rapidly shone their torch lights into all corners of the room, checking to see if they had company.

The sunlight spilled down the narrow staircase and petered out into the room. A glint caught his eye, some sort of pods set into the wall off to his right. He took a few steps toward them, this time a little more cautiously. There were two tall chambers, one of them appeared to be empty and full of cobwebs. The other seemed glazed over and quite opaque inside, filled with a silver-blue cloud. He carefully reached out to touch the smooth glass surface, before withdrawing his hand sharply. Cold to the touch...
"Amazing..." He said under his breath. Cassidy gave him a questioning look, "Cryogenic chambers! Just like those that were found on Atlantis... Only, this appears to be a much cruder, earlier version." It was at this point that two things happened to Michael Black. First, his mouth dried up as he briefly contemplated the idea of there being a living, breathing ancient within the chamber. Second, his heart rate increased as he contemplated the very exciting idea of there being an actual, living, breathing ancient within the chamber! He rushed over to the control panels that appeared to be attached to the pods. There was a chair, seemingly untouched by time, resting just in front of the console. He reached out to take a seat and...

"Erm... Guys?" He called out, "cats aren't native to this planet are they?" He looked up at the others and slowly, gently turned the chair around to reveal a small black and tan feline, quite happily curled up on itself, seemingly asleep.

Fee was already in her Zone, a look of intense concentration on her face as she started to work. A tiny bit of her tongue could be seen from the left corner of her mouth, as she bit down, a nervous habit. She sighed, and stamped her foot. She couldn't reach the uppermost buttons, and as she turned around to ask Dr. Black to get her something to stand on, she heard him cry out.

BLOODY HELL! She looked around quickly, and then instinctvely dove behind the closest machine. She crawled out when she realized that there was no present danger.

This looks like it wasn't made all that long ago you know... She stood up, and returned to her console, where Ackerman was, and then glanced around. She nodded when Black looked at her...but what did it MEAN?? None of the other machines meant a thing to HER.

Then, Michael went on.

Amazing...Cryogenic chambers! Just like those that were found on Atlantis... Only, this appears to be a much cruder, earlier version. Fee raised an eyebrow. Cryogenics? Like, to freeze people? She looked to Torsten, and then back to Black.

Cryogenics? Like, to freeze people? As in terrible movies on BBC 3? She inquired. Then, a strange thought entered her head.

Great more hunters... She whirled around, but couldn't find the source of the voice. Then, Black spoke again. He was about to sit near her console-she could USE that chair!

Erm... Guys?...cats aren't native to this planet are they? She gazed at him; was he batty? A cat, here in space? Then, he turned the chair, and she saw for herself; an adorable calico cat, sleeping as if it were the Queen of Sheba. Fee smiled.

He's quite sweet. Think I could pet him? Can I keep him? He'll need a proper place to stay; if what's out THERE is attacking US, this poor helpless cat won't stand a chance... She looked from male to male. If any of them were like her own Da, she'd win the kitty.

Síobhan remained at the back of the group as they pressed forward through the entrance with her eyes wandering from wall to wall and amazed by the look of the terminals them self. She felt like walking over and hitting buttons at random to see what would happen.
She was surprised how much of the equipment looked familiar to that of Atlantis. She had never been to Atlantis, but had a full briefing and files on anything that was concerned to be of use to her. The room seem to be focused on Cryogenics if she was right. As she approached one of the terminals she was taken by surprise by what equipment lay next to it, she could only imaging how many lifes could be saved and much more.
She paid little attention to the conversations going on, been like a child in a candy shop she went from terminal to terminal and trying to see if anything was familiar that came to mind from what she read. As much as she found the terminals interesting she was stuck with the fact of no power which prevented her from digging deeper in to the terminals.
As she found a group of crystals her attention spun towards Dr Black and Fiona.

He's quite sweet. Think I could pet him? Can I keep him? He'll need a proper place to stay; if what's out THERE is attacking US, this poor helpless cat won't stand a chance.

SÍobhan looked for a second at the cat wondering how dangerous this kitty could be. When she lived in London she had a cat with her former boyfriend until they broke up and then she had gave it away to get back at him. The cat was a ginger cat with lots of independence, not seeing it from one day till the next and sometimes even hiding in her underwater drawer. Síobhan whispered.

" I recommend we keep are distance, I could give are kitty some sedative to keep it asleep, he could be dangerous and I could even do a proper medical check. "

Aear can only listen as the people bustle around him, whilst technically he is asleep his mind is still plenty active, as Fiona can no doubt hear.

These hunters don't travel a lot do they...? Of course they don't. Going home anytime soon would make sense, I can't have that.

He's quite sweet. Think I could pet him? Can I keep him? He'll need a proper place to stay; if what's out THERE is attacking US, this poor helpless cat won't stand a chance...

Huh, they brought a civvy with them... he rationalises not expecting Fiona to be so 'happy' to see him.

I recommend we keep are distance, I could give are kitty some sedative to keep it asleep, he could be dangerous and I could even do a proper medical check.

Bright idea, put the sleeping cat to sleep. Actually ya know what, do it. My nanites will go wild, wake me up and i'll blow the whole place up since I'll have to use a core... Next time i'm gonna ask if their trying to kill me or just capture me...

Michael Black cautiously took a step back from the cat,
“I recommend we keep our distance, I could give are kitty some sedative to keep it asleep, he could be dangerous and I could even do a proper medical check.” He had to agree with this.
“Not a bad idea. I am very unsure about the presence of a standard domestic feline on an alien planet. Particularly one such as this that doesn’t seem to find our presence all that alarming. And I am damn sure that this cannot be Lillith’s ten thousand year old pet cat still roaming around.” He eyed the creature with caution. His eyes also flickered over to the Cryogenic chamber, the blue gas swirling around against the glass window. Something had to be in there. He turned back to the team, their pale faces reflecting the dim light of the single bulb gently swinging above,
“So exactly how do we propose to capture this little fella?” An awkward pause followed, he was reluctant to take the first move. Having owned a cat before, Michael was well aware that they can move pretty darn fast when they didn't want to be caught i.e before a trip to the vets. He cast a glance back at the bulkhead door at the end of the room, it was only then that he noticed it was partially open, darkness seeping through the crack. His eyes flicked from Torsten to the door and back to Torsten, he didn't want to alarm anyone by making a fuss but he hoped the soldier had noticed it too.

He's a bloody cat, not a LION. What is dangerous about kitty cats, besides the claws?! Fee sighed. Then, Dr. Black spoke.

Are you bleedin' serious?! With that, the diminuitive ginger simply reached over and plucked up the cat. As she did so, she spoke.

Me stepmum has cats. Two of the bloody animals-Tuna and Mu-Mu. I don't fancy them, but they fancy me. Dr. Kells, a sedative. He can stay in me pack. All that's in there is me jumper. She pulled the sweater out of her knapsack, still carefully holding the cat, moving slowly and gently as not to wake him. He purred when she pet him, and she wrapped him in her jumper and held him towards the doctor.

His breathing is deep and strong. He purred a little, too! She wondered what in bloody hell the others were playing at. It was a cat, maybe a leftover from a previous mission, or an alien speicies. If you listened to certain factions of Tau'ri scentists and conspiracy theorist, Alien beings visited Earth on a regular basis, anyway. Surely one of them had learned to love thier feline friends.

Fee stamped her foot, "Are you bleedin' serious?!" It was amazing how something as simple as a cat could cause such confusion and intrigue by the simple virtue of the fact it was 3 million light years away from Earth. Fee simply scooped up the little cat into her arms.
"Well, that's certainly one way of dealing with it..." Doctor Black trailed off.
"Me step mum has cats. Two of the bloody animals-Tuna and Mu-Mu. I don't fancy them, but they fancy me. Dr. Kells, a sedative. He can stay in me pack. All that's in there is me jumper." With that she pulled the sweater out of her knapsack. Michael watched as she wrapped up the cat and held him towards the Doctor. He heard a slight low rumbling noise emanate from the feline, a purr apparently.

With that, Michael Black decided it was time to get back to work. The chair in front of him was now free, he brushed some rogue cat hairs off the smooth leather surface and sat down at the ancient console. It took just under a minute but he'd managed to work out some of the basic ancient inscription on the console, enough to turn on all the lights within the room and power up most of the other consoles.
"Bingo! Looks like we've got some power in here ladies and gentleman. I suggest there is probably a ZPM hooked up somewhere..." He squinted it a display screen in front of him and tapped in a few experimental commands, "Ah, but whatever is powering this place is almost depleted. Probably from keeping this thing on for ten thousand years" he gestured toward the stasis chamber, still cloudy and opaque and concealing whatever it was keeping alive from the team's view... for now. A conundrum presented itself to Doctor Black. Investigate the stasis chamber, look for the ZPM or contact Doctor Glavish. He grumbled under his breath, a telling off would surely be in store if he didn't report his findings before progressing. Grasping the radio attached to his flack jacket he pushed the button and received only static rather than a clear channel. He frowned at the device,
"Looks like the bunker is shielded as we expected. Probably something to do with whatever it's made from" he tapped the wall, "somebody will have to pop upstairs and see how the others are getting on. I'll sit here and try and bring up some information on what we've got here." He cast another glance at the partially open door, rubble just visible now that the lights were on, whatever was in room number two was well and truly trashed.
