Episode 7, Cause and Effect (posting group dos)

Kelly Miller had been up since 0430. After a PT, she and Conway had had a quick meeting to recap her duties helping Jones in leading the team, and Hurley had given them an update on the "situation" with the spy amongst them. She was a bit on edge after the man's report, but it was nothing that wouldn't resolve itself in due time. 

She was the first in the briefing room-which she preferred. She quickly sat down in the first chair, arranging her things as she liked them, and sipped some coffee. Dr. West had suggested she cut back, so she was limiting herself to coffee before Noon. After noon, she had tea. But it was still 10 am, so she was delightfully pounding the largest mug of coffee she could find on the space station. She scanned the file in front of her one more time-it was basically the same things she and Jason had discussed, with Hurley's report in there. Great. There was a small blurb in there from the IOA agents; Kelly STILL wasn't too sure about that Olwin woman, but who was she to judge?! Kelly had had bigger problems on her hands with a certain blonde French pilot after news of the woman's pregnancy had fallen on Kelly's ears. 

Oh, boy, THAT had been interesting. 

She took another sip, and the door opened. She smiled. 

Good morning. She liked the people she was assigned to work with. They were fast becoming a family, and she liked that.

Things were finally back to normal, no spatial brain anomaly thingy's or whatever the scientific term is, although it is technobabble to Caiden since he isn't an astrophysicist. Medical school never taught anything about spatial or temporal anomalies in brains or on the human body, but this being the Stargate Program, it didn't really surprise him with all of the weird alien things that happen all the time.

Caiden did his paperwork for that event and it was a killer, although it wasn't really paperwork here, it was all done on the computer even though that took some getting used too and delayed things since it took more time and required you fill in the required right areas whereas you could skip it on paper and it is easier to do on paper. It was however, easier since if you made mistakes you can hit the backspace instead of crossing it out or having to start over.

That was the highlight of Caiden's past short while and is usually the highlight of his work as Chief Medical Officer. He longed for the days where people actually came with traumatic injuries requiring trauma surgery, they were always fun for him and still are. A trauma surgeon doesn't become a trauma surgeon if he or she doesn't like the job, but Caiden liked being under pressure where he has to rely on his training, experience and quick thinking to solve the problem, he works great under pressure, the last major event however wasn't exactly his area of expertise.

Caiden was however glad to be out of the infirmary and even though he wasn't a big fan of briefings, it did get him out of the office and he liked getting out. He walked into the briefing room and there was only one person there, but surely the others will fall in quickly. Caiden made a cup of coffee, he wasn't a huge fan but it kept him awake and it was only ten in the morning. "Morning, Captain." He said to Captain Miller as she sat at the table. Caiden took his coffee and walked to the table and took a seat across from the Captain.

Hurley was the third to enter the room. As those who he worked with were accustomed to, in his hands was a sizable bundle of files, records and briefings, his paperwork for the morning.

As with almost every other SEAL out there, the CWO5 had joked in days gone past about retiring the moment he became a paper pusher. But that was the majority of what he life had been for the past few years. Slowly he’d become accustomed to it. When he’d first joined the Navy, the structure and discipline had taken him to adjust to. Upon joining the special warfare command, it had been the physical challenges that he’d be forced to face. And now, decades on, it was paperwork and administration. As much as he’d like to be back on the teams, he and his superiors knew that his body couldn’t have handled it in the long term. He’d come to accept that a long time ago.

For now, he did what he could behind the scenes to dot the I’s and cross the T’s, keeping the paperwork in line so those younger than him could carry on the good fight.

Major West, the base doc, and Captain Miller, the base legal officer, were already seated. He spotted the steaming cups of joe in front of both Kelly and Caiden. Despite his age, coffee was a vice Hurley had so far been able to avoid. For how much longer, giving the increasing pile of paperwork that was coming in, remained to be seen.

“Major, Cap’n,” he said as he took his seat.

He used a few moments before the meeting started to flick through the files in front of him. It was the usual combination of the previous day’s mission reports, planned Stargate activity for the day, and an assortment of personnel files, including requests to join the expedition, requests to transfer home, promotion packets from supervisors, and award commendations. For the most part, vital yet mind numbingly work. Still, getting a start on it while the waited for the XO and the alien delegation meant less work to do later.

[Dr. Roger Harrison]

The psychologist/doctor was tired. One mission after another, and not enough time to be of much use to address the serious blowback from the aftermath...namely, losing friends, the two reckelss scientists who chose to defy orders and venture into a radiation storm alone-and Maggie. So the man was a little swamped, and the last thing he really needed was yet another mission to throw his plan a tizzy. He felt like he was never doing enough-even though, conciously, he was well aware that he was doing more than plenty-the psychologist in him wanted to do so much more.

But there wasn't time. So here he was, ready for the briefing. He entered quietly, nodding to the group. Three of the senior staffers were already present-all the military-Captain Miller, Major West, and CWO Hurley. He immediately poured himself coffee-down three cups today (so much for cutting back-but tomorrow was a new day!), and settled in. He rubbed his eyes-he'd slept three hours yesterday, but at least the piles of paperwork were FINALLY finished, and all personnel had passed psych evals-though a few had barely passed. But that wasn't HIS concern, exactly-he'd offered it to those who needed it (he felt), and informed Conway of his thoughts. It was up to the patient and Conway to evaluate and assess-and up to Rog to pick up the pieces.

He let out a sigh, and then spoke.

How are we today? Just waiting for the alien trio, are we?

Achilles walked into the room in his blue-white dress uniform, with navy insignia in place of the marine insignia. In his hand he carried the standard swivel top, touch-screen Toughbook. On his right hip there was the normally issued leather pistol pouch. But instead of a normal M1911, in the pouch was a particle magnum, not that such a thing was visually noticeable by any observer. On his left hip was the standard officer's saber in it's sheath. On his hands were white leather gloves in place of the cotton white dress gloves. His left glove was made in such a manner that it has opening just large enough and in the right place to use his ribbon devices that was under it.

After Achilles sat down, he looked around the room and spoke. "Now we're just waiting on the 'alien trio' as you call them. I wonder what's keeping them?"

The two final members of the base delegation, Doctor Harrison and Captain Jones, entered the briefing room and took their seats. The latter was attired in what could only be described as a unique combination of Navy and Marine uniforms, which included some ceremonial and even alien elements. Hurley would have had a word to the man had he belonged to the base’s warrant officer cohort, but as it stood, it wasn’t his place to comment. His remit around base, and for most part the majority of his interests and energies, were directed to the warrants. Beyond that, he tended to stay out of matters.

“I haven’t received word they’ll be late,” the CWO5 explained to Harrison and Jones. Of the three alien representatives they were meeting, Aear had been around the expedition since the start and would have know his way to the briefing room, while Almeda had been literally been built on this very planet. It could have been a cultural misunderstanding, or that they had a different perception of time to humans. Still, Hurley hadn’t gotten to where he was now by being late for meetings with senior field grade officers.

“I’ll find them,” he added, rising from his chair and moving toward the Ancient communication panel mounted on the wall near the door.

Hurley was halfway to the panel when an explosion rocked the base. It knocked him from his feet, and only a lucky grab onto a nearby chair stopped him from landing on his face. The room was plunged into darkness for a split second before emergency lighting kicked in. A deafening roar filled the room and disappeared as suddenly as it had arrived. Seconds later, base alert klaxons rang out.

“What the hell was that!?” he yelled into the comms panel. A technician on the other end reported that there had been an explosion on the base near Stargate Operations, and while they weren’t certain, it appeared as though it had been in or near the General’s office.

Without hesitation, Hurley and the other senior staff in the room hurried out the door.

Roger knew that the Aliens ran their own lives pretty much in concert with how the military ran Meropis. If anything, it was HIS opinion that they let the aliens more or less run the show, seeing as it was their "land", and unlike his countrymen, Roger didn't feel the need to conquer any and every thing he came into contact with. THAT opinion, however, was very unpopular, so he kept it to himself. That is why Hurley's announcement didn't bother him too much.

I haven’t received word they’ll be late... Roger just shrugged. He had time. He had learned YEARS ago not to sweat things too much...of course, that is why he wouldn't have made it well in the military, nor in government work. In medicine, it was understood that things took time.

Hurley volunteered to find them, and Roger set about making some tea. Might as well have a cuppa whilst they waited, right?!

A moment later, the undeniable sounds of an explosion rang out. THAT was not good. Without hesitation, Roger ran out of the room behind Hurley, grabbing his medical bag (which he always kept with him out of sheer habit these days) on the way.

He yelled out into the hallway.

I need a headcount. Alert the infirmary that we'll be bringing bodies. Hurley, is it clear for me to enter?! He waited for the man's confirmation before going in. He didn't like the looks on anyones faces. He hoped there was SOMETHING he could do.

A moment later, the smoke died down, and he entered the General's office. An explosion of that magnitude made it so blood and guts were everywhere. This didn't look good. He found the General-well. MOST of him-and knelt down. Feeling stupid, he felt for a pulse, then looked towards the door where Hurley, Miller, and the others stood. He shook his head. Dr. West was bent over Olwin, doing the same.

I regret to inform you that he is dead. Time of death I am calling at 0958 hours. Someone help me to get him to the infirmary...I'll contact HQ while Dr. West does the paperwork... He didn't want to ask what was now?!
