Hey all, I am still writing my book, a few different ones but the one I am starting with is called Gateway Command, GW-1 (Gateway Command Series). Below I posted my prologue which quickly introduces you to what the book will be about. This is only a first draft, but tell me what you think... Also feel free to point out any grammar issues or anything like that...
White House, Situation Room
President Caiden West entered the room and the Military Officers, Director of National Intelligence and the Secretary of Defense stood around the table until the President motioned for them to sit back down, then he did wearing his black suit, and red tie, like always. "Morning, everyone. I take it this is important?" The President said sarcastically as he took his seat at the head of the long wooden table.
"Important yes," the Secretary of Defense Michael Peterson said as he slid the President a file. "Mister President, we just recovered a piece of alien technology that a team of our scientists recovered from Antarctica. We sent it to Peterson Air Force Base for examination."
"Really?" The President asked not sure if it is good or bad, being alien it probably is the latter but you never know. The President opened the file and started to skim through.
"Yes, sir." Secretary of Defense Michael Peterson said looking at the General sitting across from him, "General." He turned the floor over to the US Air Force General Paul Llewellyn, who is in charge of the US Air Force Space Command, meaning he is in charge of everything to do with space on behalf of the US Air Force.
"Mister President, we had the alien technology examined before we brought it to Peterson on a secure C5 cargo plane and we determined the technology to be an interplanetary transportation device and with it the dialing device. We only have one address at this time but we literally just got the device stateside, so we may unlock more addresses on our own or the one address may yield more." General Paul Llewellyn said.
"Seriously? What is this a joke on the new President?" President Caiden West asked with a smile, he has only been President for six months now.
"No sir, you will learn pretty quick, if you want humor, we don't have any." US Army General William Lewis, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said without a smile and with a serious look on his face, although he always look the same even if he gives good news, which is rare.
"Right," the President said. "So what are we talking about here? How does it transport people to other planets? What does it look like?"
"Sir," General Paul Llewellyn said as he picked up the remote control and turned on one of the flat screen TV's and it displayed an image. The image showed a large circular device shaped like a doughnut with six transparent light fixtures and the other device was a pedestal standing about four feet tall and having an interactive touch screen display on the top, on an upwards diagonal slope.
"From what I am told from one of my leading astrophysicists and aerospace engineers, you have to type in a six symbol non repeating address. The red lights will light up for every symbol and if successful, the lights will turn green and it will create a stable artificial wormhole that connects between the two gates, once connected it allows people to walk through and instantaneously arrive on the other side. The pedestal has forty eight unique symbols and with the six symbol non repeating address it means that it could potentially connect to billions of other gates." General Paul Llewellyn said as the President and everyone else looked at the screen.
"That is a lot to take in." The President said still looking at the image. "At our level of technology which isn't even close to this Gateway, is going out there such a good idea? I mean we may be the strongest force here on Earth but that means nothing on a galactic scale. Do you think the benefits are worth the risks?"
"No idea, sir." General Llewellyn replied. "However, personally speaking I would rather know what is out there than not know. We may be alone in the Galaxy right now or we may be the most advanced. We may also be the least advanced, but it is only a matter of time before we make first contact whether that is good or bad is anyone's guess."
"I agree with the General." The Director of National Intelligence, Jackie Garner said. "Being the DNI, I would like to know. If there is a hostile interstellar race, then it is only a matter of time before they find us, but we could find things out there that could better help us to defend ourselves, maybe even find some powerful allies."
"I understand." The President said looking around the table. "I was a former Green Beret, I know what this could mean, good or bad. So let's do this, we have to place the Gateway somewhere and send through a team to the one address we have and see what we find. If we find more addresses, we'll set up a program and start searching to see what is out there, if not then we'll dock it until we find something more. How does that sound?"
"Sounds fair, Mister President." The Secretary of Defense said. "Where would you like us to set it up? Area 51?"
"Area 51," the DNI started, "would be a good location. We have a brand new underground base we built there strictly for research and development on experimental technology and emerging technology. We can send the Gateway there and send the first team through."
"Do it." The President ordered. "For now this meeting is to be continued, if all goes well and more addresses are found then we will set up a permanent special access program to explore these worlds and to reverse engineer any and all advanced alien technology we find. They will be tasked with making first contact with other civilizations through the Gateway and find out what is happening in the Galaxy. Dismissed." The President said standing up and leaving the file on the table as he left the Situation Room to go back to his Presidential duties.
