It was over now. More accurately, the high drama was over. There were still tasks to do-cleanup, and morale issues, and it was bound to be a legal and paperwork nightmare. She should sleep soon, but that wasn't likely to happen for a few hours, at least. Maybe a snifter of brandy and a few hours with Thomas Hardy.
She settled in at her computer, ignoring the fact that she should probably report to Medical-all they were going to tell her was to gargle with salt water and walk it off anyway. She was a Marine, and "walking it off" was the Corps' response to everything. You eject over a field of landmines and blow your arm off? Change your socks and walk it off. Your hop crashes into the Big Drink and you gotta get a rescue from Big Ugly? Put a bandaid on it and walk it off. You die from a gunshot wound to the chest? That's right-you walk it off and get your sorry six back out there.
So she ignored the mild shoulder pain, swallowing down some Advil, and turned on her computer. She waited impatiently for it to start up her email program, and then she sent off a few transmissions to Earth.
