Dear All,
It is with great pleasure that I proudly announce the 7 years of Stargate: Meropis celebrations. Myself and Cass (mostly Cass I swear!) have worked incredibly hard with the support of Zodd, Roo and Ahrima to pull things together for this and oh boy do we have a few treats lined up for you. I'd like to say a few words in a moment, but first - what can you look forward to with the quite extensive forum updates?
New 3.0 Skin - Cass has been working hard to bring you Meropis v3.0, a brand new and shiny skin to celebrate our upgrade to the third carnation of this wonderful forum. It comes complete with a new banner and all sorts! For those that don't like change, 2.0 is still select-able via the quick theme changer (the "T" icon) down on the bottom right. There will still be the occasional optional skin for special occasions 'cos our graphics mod is awesome like that!
Shop System - That's right, it is finally here! The finished shop and money system. How does it work? There are certain items that are "standard issue" (read: free) which include the P90 and the uniform, anybody can have these to get you started. At the end of each episode you will be issued with your pay for that particular in-game month, you can then spend it on weapons, suits or if you really want... Candy! The idea is that the weapons and gear you buy in the shop will be the weapons your character uses in your posts. This means, if you want better weapons to use on your mission, you'll need to save up for them by completing an episode. How else can you earn money? You'll get $15 per post and you can also play the stock market to try and increase your funds. You can also add funds to your bank account (the piggy bank icon) and, depending on the current Meropis interest rate, increase your savings that way. What's more is you can trade your items with other players too. A thread will soon be opened to take suggestions for future shop items and there will be regular updates to patch these in.
Stargate: AU board - Ever wondered what things would be like if your character never joined the Stargate Program? Would you meet some of the other characters? Who would occupy Meropis? With our new out of mission role playing board "Stargate: AU" the possibilities are literally endless. What's more is there is no limit on the thread counts so you can go crazy and explore your character's alternate destiny.
Out of Mission Threads Overhaul - Together with the above, we've combed through all the existing out of mission role plays, while there remains a limit of ten at any one time (to make sure we finish one before starting another) there are some cracking ideas coming, some published and some not. So when you're waiting for the next person to post, swing by and jump into a thread of your choosing. The out of mission section provides us with a chance for our characters to develop and truly explore the ancient city of Meropis. Why not visit the Doc for a check-up or tinker around with an ancient device in lab? What happens next is up to you...
Board Cleanup - On top of the above, the staff team have been working hard to remove old "junk" that has been clogging up the forum for years. Little tweaks here and there make things run a lot smoother and you might notice a few subtle differences over the next few weeks.
Cass's Surprise! - Oh my, I was lucky enough to preview this. I will let Cass announce this shortly but it is truly something special.
Easter Egg Hunt - Again, I'll let Cass announce this shortly but there is an exciting opportunity upon us to discover and keep some neat little weapons, badges and surprises simply by hunting for Easter Eggs hidden around the forum. The first one will be hidden later tonight.
A message from me then! Not many people know this but Stargate: Meropis hasn't actually been active for the entire 7 years. There have been plenty of ups in our history and, as you'd expect, plenty of downs. Meropis started as a small idea of mine 7 years ago when I created the forum. It had no real structure or guidance and back then it was just myself, Chicago Eastlyn, Ahrima and a handful of others just role playing about a second ancient city. I thank my two staff for being with me from the start through all of it. Meropis underwent a couple of hiatus' throughout this time, the most recent one ending in early 2014 when Meropis 2.0 finally launched with an episodic format and a vision to make the forum similar to a Stargate version of D&D with plots, plot twists, great story telling including over-riding story arcs and pre-planned traps that your characters have been falling for! We calculated that at time of writing in April 2015, Meropis has been active for around 16 months of that 7 years, which is a great achievement for any online RPG in it's own right, and it looks like we're going to continue on stronger than ever!
The reason I really love Meropis is three-fold. Number one is the escapism, I think we all need it from time to time. Everyday life, work, social situations, housework - all of these can take their toll. Sometimes it is nice just to sit down, open up your laptop and type up a few creative posts, contribute to a story, read other character's reactions to yours. It truly is a wonderful thing. The second reason is the community here on the forum, we're all a friendly bunch and we all look out for each other. We stand together against trolls and bullies and we're all just in it to have fun. The third and final reason I really love this forum is your creativity. This forum, in my opinion, is by far better than any book I have ever read and it keeps on taking twists and turns that even I can't predict! You guys are to be thanked for that.
Where do we go from here? What does the future hold for Meropis? We are currently most of the way through Episode Five of Season One and while the first 3-4 episodes moved incredibly slowly, we seem to have finally found our groove and our way of working things out. The staff team have over-all story arc plans for the whole of the ten episodes of season one. Who is Lilith? What do the Etruscans want and what are they? What about the Meowtians? What further secrets does Meropis hold? It is all set to come together in an explosive season finale with a few more exciting twists on the way. While we can't be sure we'll make it to season two, there are tentative plans on the table from a few of the forum's members and staff. We hope that with the increasing speed of the forum we can and will get there and things will continue to grow rather than die out, but we'll take each day as it comes. There are TONS of exciting plots lined up for future episodes for both the base and off-world teams, in short - watch this space.
As promised, I have said a few words, and I invite others to do the same if they so desire. Keep it simple, keep it sane and enjoy the celebrations as we dive into a bright and beautiful future here at Meropis v3.0.
From the bottom of my heart... Thank You,
Steve aka Jason Conway and several other characters
