I asked this same question on Gateworld so I just copied and pasted it below:
Hey all, so I've been writing a book for a while now on and off and I scratched it and since I am a huge Stargate fan especially SG-1 and Atlantis (I don't like Universe), I wanted it to be similar to that. The only thing in common would technically be the stargate although even that is much different and not called a stargate. There will be a number of different alien races and species but we will also have other humans and human-like races.
The off-world missions would be conducted in teams of 4 like stargate but they're government officials for a secret agency. They're basically SHIELD mixed with Men in Black and Stargate. There will be advanced tech and advanced civilizations that are totally original, most will be friendly and neutral but of course you'll have your bad guys too. I am planning a series since one book or even a trilogy wouldn't be enough but before I even release my first book which isn't done yet but is easily half way through, I wanted to get your advice or suggestions for the alien races and tech.
My basis is that we are the second evolution of humans with the first being long dead yet very advanced and planting our "seeds" all over the universe with seed ships to plant carbon based lifeforms and humans. The book is set in the present day so only the present day technology will be included with some advanced tech scavenged from advanced alien ships found around Earth and used to advance secret technology. I will not have the Asgard in it, yet I will have aliens like them, I like the little grey guys, afterall...
So here is where you come in, what do you think should be the limits to these different civilizations and the limits to our technology found from around the off-world trips. There will be tech like we've seen and tech that is created by my mind but do you have any suggestions or advise for it? I'd love to hear it!
Thanks!
