Briefing Room
Meropis City
The tension in the room had risen a few notches, and distinctive arguments were being formulated both for and against having anything to do with the device. The General always tried to remain neutral and make a logical, informed decision, but something about this particular case was certainly swaying him one way more than the other.
"At the present moment the the British armed forces with US air force are working with the NID to secure the device in the Arizona desert. Destroy it or not we believe it may be only a matter of time before it activities or someone makes move to take it."
Dr. Kells answered the General's question about the location of the device. Right. So it was still on Earth, that in itself presented the commanding officer with a dilemma to mull over.
"Is it safe to destroy it?" Roger had raised another good point, Jason listened with intently, "I know I am not a rocket scientists, but black holes close up eventually... If we're able to determine what it's made of, or where it came from, that might tell us more. That's all. Also, I'll fit you in at 2 pm. I am sure your patients will understand." Jason knew of Dr. Kells' famous Irish character and her unwillingness to back down, he watched with interest as she replied,
"My apologies Roger can't do a late lunch, but if Dr Harrison would like me to make a visit please send it in writing to my commanding officer and with listing your reasons. Till than we have a matter at hand." She immediately turned away from Roger and back to Conway, "Either we do something with the device or we hand it to the US army."
Jason paused, allowing a little breathing room before he delivered his reply with a gentle voice and a hand extended toward Dr. Kells,
"As the commanding officer on this base, I'm going to see to it that you DO visit Roger for a standard evaluation... Please. I'll forward the necessary paperwork back to Stargate Command for your Earth bound supervisors." Turning to the rest of the table he continued, "That applies to anyone who has anything remotely to do with this object. I'm not taking any chances here, we've seen what it can do to people. I don't want another McManus. As for the U.S Army, like hell are we going to condemn our good planet by handing it over to them. I've worked at home world command long enough to see the look in the eyes of some of those men, not everything can be should to further the war efforts back home..." He trialed off, "But that stays between this four walls okay?"
"I doubt the Chinese and the Russians will just let you hand it over, it's clearly not our own technology and the IOA will always want to review any decision regarding it." The familiar Australian twang of Ryan Decker was next to cut across the table, Jason bit his tongue for the moment, he wasn't entirely sure the IOA knew the full extent of this mission just yet. "As for if it's safe to destroy, It isn't safe to have around I'm sure that is clear. We also can't know what will happen every time we fire a weapon in combat Doctor Harrison, short of destroying it we need to deposit it in the intergalactic void somewhere, preferably somewhere no one knows about, we'd have to program a hyperspace capable vessel to make it's own decision then wipe it's memory and storage."
"That's a very creative idea Decker, but I can see a flaw in the plan, namely that the device will still exist somewhere within the universe. I'm leaning toward shutting this thing down for good, once we get it away from Earth that is." Conway replied.
"If the British government decides to hand it over, I'm going to recommend we raise the issue with the other members of the IOA, force either a joint agreement on how we are going to attempt and likely fail to study it safely, or have it destroyed." Decker suggested.
And with that, a moment of silence fell over the room. Lt. Decker was suggesting talking to various government officials, bringing the device to the attention of the Gate Alliance Treaty and dealing with it officially. Several thoughts ran through Conway's mind, an internal conflict played out. He revisited the images Siobhan had showed them all, the way the device had made the soldiers attack and kill each other without a second thought. He bit his bottom lip and nodded to himself, placing a hand on the table and clearing his throat.
"Here's what we're going to do." His voice was authoritative and clear, the way Jason was now speaking, he had THAT look in his eyes, "Based on how secret Dr. Kells' mission was, kept even from me, and how secret this very meeting is. I doubt that the higher ups back on Earth know the true extent of this device. Once it reaches them, it'll disappear, even from our sight and then God only knows what horrors we'll be dealing with. We cannot allow this thing to be weaponised... Dr. Kells I take it you know where they are keeping it currently?" He allowed her to give a short reply before cutting in again,
"We'll assemble a small strike team, take the Sun Tzu back home. If we can get close enough to get a transponder on the device container we can beam it out of there and high tail it back to Triangulum before anybody knows what for. I'll handle the inevitable questions that come later, as far as we all know, this is a resupply mission only." He paused to scan the faces of those in the room with him, he was essentially asking them to lie to their superiors back home, but he knew each and every one of these people and he trusted them at least enough to invite them to this briefing. He just hoped his trust wasn't misplaced.
"Once we get it out here, we need to destroy it. No ifs, no buts and certainly no studying, I won't risk death and destruction for a little knowledge. K6N-237, it's a solar system with only one Stargate on a barren planet, there's no life at stake there. We take the Sun Tzu there and we sacrifice an empty F-302, I'll chalk it up to a miscount in the last battle. We autopilot it - and the device - straight into the nearest star and be gone before the boom. Worst case? We blow up a solar system. Only this time nobody gets the blame for it." He finished and calmly leaned back in his chair. Now would be the real test, would his team call him up on it, would they report him, or would this be the beginning of the end for the device.
