Fee was ready to go tete-a-tete with Aear, but the General stopped them in time.

Both of you! Please!... She moved her look from the Cat Man to the General. She took a few deep breaths, keeping her gaze steady. She was deadly serious at this moment, and if Aear was going to act the pisser, he was free to go. She sighed deeply, but before she could start in, the General broke the silence.

I honestly don't know where to start. I'm not qualified to talk about what both are you are hinting at here... You're better of having a one to one with Doc Harrison. But, if you wish, I'm here and I will listen...."I want you both to feel that Meropis is a safe place to be. If you don't, I consider it a failure as leader of this expedition... So, Maccafferty first, have at it."

Fee sighed. Where should she begin?? 

Well, you know how I dislike being exposed to men? There's a reason for that. In college, I was sexually assaulted by my boss...I was a teacher's assitant. He was tutoring me in Aeronautics, and we were at his house. It started off innocently enough, but...over time, it got a little more intense. Mind you, I started college when I was 16...and I was alone there in Boston until Christmas. Anyway...one night he gave me some wine, and started in about how pretty I was, smart, too...all the things I've always wanted a man to say, of course...Dr. Harrison says that's normal. Anyway...it happened, and I...I never reported it. It happened again, later, at NASA, but I reported that one. The man there, Samuel, he's-they caught him... She paused. Everytime she told it, it got a little easier. I suppose that what I mean to say is that sometimes, I tend to be a bit timid, and I dislike being under control of men I can't understand, but...I don't want it to affect my performance here. If that happens, please tell me. And Doc H, so he can assist, as well. I might hide away when new people come aboard, but it's really a coping thing...and I will get over it eventually... By now, she was just babbling, trying to give Conway enough reassurance that she could be at once a scardey-cat, and still do her job. She turned her head to Aear, and raised an eyebrow, as if saying "next," unaware of the impact her statement may have had.

Aear's mind was running away with him, his ears flicked wildly and his tail lashed over the side of the chair. He wanted to run, hide, lash out at the pair of them beat them to a bloody pulp, anything that might make him feel safe again. Every little sound was getting to him, the footsteps from far down the hall, the chatter, the sound of someone dropping someone and clambering to pick it up again, the hum from the city. His eyes darted around the room as he heard voices, voices from those long gone, the hauntings form his memories, the old lines he'd been forced to recite over and over. He didn't even hear Conway's words, they didn't reach him as he scanned the room again and again. He opened his mouth to speak but Fee's words finally got through to him. He looked to her with pain and understanding.

When she was finished he opened his mouth and closed it again a few times. It took a few moments before he was finally able to speak. A weapon doesn't feel pain. A weapon doesn't feel fear. A weapon doesn't feel mercy. He looked away as the episode finally settled somewhat. Another few moments of relentless silence past before he looked up to her again. That was... Daily for us... If it wasn't rape then it was beatings... Mind games... They taught us we weren't supposed to feel... We were just tools to be used and thrown away... And whatever taught us our place was the meal of the day... Aear spoke slowly. Not entirely sure what to say, not entirely sure what he wanted to say. He just stared back at her his eyes full of tears that he refused to let fall. I'm not saying you shouldn't have gone through that... I just... With the fire and pain of how we were grown.... Aear couldn't say anymore his voice croaking as the last words escaped him. He looked away once again. I'm sorry... He truly meant it both for Fee and himself.

Fee realized what she'd said, and then squirmed around in her chair for a moment, before fixing her gaze on the floor. She sighed, and then looked to Aear.

A weapon doesn't feel pain. A weapon doesn't feel fear. A weapon doesn't feel mercy....That was... Daily for us... If it wasn't rape then it was beatings... Mind games... They taught us we weren't supposed to feel... We were just tools to be used and thrown away... And whatever taught us our place was the meal of the day... Fee looked away, her face set firmy.

*I* was not a spoil of war. I was a girl, Aear. She almost spat at him, upset that he was trying to compare what they had both gone through. It was different; war was war, but violating a CHILD was something else entirely. At least Aear could UNDERSTAND what had happened.

'm not saying you shouldn't have gone through that... I just... With the fire and pain of how we were grown.... I'm sorry... Fee softened a little. She looked to Conway.

In truth, the General had taken a lot of his own personal time to vet and read the files of as many of his expedition members as he could, Fiona Maccafferty included. Of course, there was a team of vetting clerks back at Stargate Command who could do this for him but he liked to know who he was working with, their strengths, their weakness and in this case... Their vulnerabilities. He knew a brief bit of background on the scientist sat before him, but he allowed her to elaborate, occasionally flicking his gaze back to Aear Charter just to make sure the man, no, the alien wasn't getting any funny ideas. He wasn't sure about the Meowtian race just yet...

Maccafferty had begun explaining her dark past. She stopped to think, neither Jason nor Aear dared interrupt her. She finished her speech with a powerful statement regarding controlling men and her ability to cope with such people. Conway was painfully aware of the unfortunate circumstances they were in at this precise moment, he chose his words carefully,
"Fiona, listen." He took a deep breath to summon up the courage to say what he had no, wanted to say, "Yes, you are pretty, and yes you are talented, smart whatever you want to call it. There is no getting away from it. Believe me, I read your file and knew a little about what you just told me already, I appreciate your courage in filling in the rest of the story, really I do. I was the one who had Doc Harrison get in contact with you and.. Keep an eye on you. All of those sessions are confidential, even from me, but I'm just glad they take place." He paused briefly, trying to make his posture as least threatening as possible, "It is unfortunate that yes, I am a man, and yes you technically work for me as a part of this expedition. But believe me, if I get so much as a whiff of anybody trying it on, any department heads, soldiers..." He cast a glance to Aear, "Anybody... Let's just say that the justice system out here can be bent a little, so far from home... Trust me Fiona. I want to keep you safe out here. I need you as part of my team, your skill set is beyond that of a good 98% of similar scientists back on Earth. You do what you have to do to get by, just be the best you can is all I ask." Another pause, there was something else he needed to add, he had an overwhelming feeling of being not very good at this kind of thing... "As for me. I have a team of people to hold me to account, you included. Think of it as I work for you and not the other way around. Somebody has to be the figurehead of this expedition, somebody has to take that flack when it all goes wrong, let that person be me, let me shield you from as much as I can... Both of you." His gaze turned to Aear as did Fiona's. Conway blinked slowly and nodded to the Meowtian, a figurative 'go ahead'. In the back of his mind he wished he was stood over a battle plan, this conversation was proving to be far more challenging than any war he'd been in.

"A weapon doesn't feel pain. A weapon doesn't feel fear. A weapon doesn't feel mercy." The Meowtian man looked away, a few moments of silence passed before he spoken again, "That was... Daily for us... If it wasn't rape then it was beatings... Mind games... They taught us we weren't supposed to feel... We were just tools to be used and thrown away... And whatever taught us our place was the meal of the day... I'm not saying you shouldn't have gone through that... I just... With the fire and pain of how we were grown.. I'm sorry.." Aear was addressing the last part of his speech directly to Fiona.
"*I* was not a spoil of war. I was a girl, Aear." Fiona spat back vitriolically, she too was suffering a world of emotions right now.

Conway could see Aear welling up, reliving the painful mix of emotions that he himself had long ago learned to wall off. He did not speak, instead he was assessing his own feelings. New feelings, this alien who he had regarded with such distrust had been through so much pain and suffering. He knew there would be thousands more out there just like it, The Etruscans and other enemies were tearing the Galaxy apart on a scale he couldn't even comprehend. "And here we are... Sent out from Earth just to find new medicines, ZPMs and other technology, all on a monthly payroll... Yet it becomes clear Mr. Charter, clear that Meropis stands for something more. Meropis has a duty. A duty to the innocent that reside in the Triangulum Galaxy... We will fight for you Aear. We will fight to avenge you, we will fight to free those who suffer unnecessarily as you once did. You have my word, my promise." Conway cleared his throat, not allowing himself to feel, donning his cool and calm General's complexion and turned his head back to Fiona, "And we will fight to defend." He locked eye contact with her for a few brief moments before breaking away. Another minute passed. "Aear... Fee... Why don't you two go and get some fresh air. Better yet, Fee why don't you show Aear some of our systems up in gate ops, don't worry about security clearance, I'll grant it. I have a feeling he might be simply fascinated by the wonders and potential this enormous city holds... Besides, it'll take your mind off things..." He had to take a sip of water from his glass at this point, this conversation would be one that he'd remember for a long time.

It was Aear's turn to give Fee a LOOK. He couldn't help but grin at the statement. He wasn't talking about his recent captivity, the torture for information was nothing in comparison. Spoils of war? He shook his head. No those scientists are the closest thing we ever had to biological parents. We were children and that was how we were raised.

It's not your fault. You needn't have stayed.

Aear took hold of Fee's hand and squeezed gently. He looked at her and smiled. You saved my life Fee. I'm not going anywhere, not when you need me.

Aear just looked at the man, he's eyes filled with pain and sorrow, happiness and thankfulness. He gave him the best smile he could manage. I appreciate the sentiment General but we took care of it when we left. There will be no more Tridents. We made sure of that. But that doesn't mean the fight is over either. So long as their are those willing to abuse their power. I appreciate all your help and hospitality and I always pay back my debts.

Yeah that might be an idea. Guess I went off on one there... Gomen. Aear held his hands together in apology. He hadn't wanted to snap at either of them. He turned to Fee and gave her a smile. Ikou ka?

Fee had settled down now after her outburst. She wasn't prone to fits of public displays. Now, she listened quietly to Aear, hurting for the both of them-and for the General, who had to HEAR it.

Fiona, listen...Yes, you are pretty, and yes you are talented, smart whatever you want to call it. There is no getting away from it. Believe me, I read your file and knew a little about what you just told me already, I appreciate your courage in filling in the rest of the story, really I do. I was the one who had Doc Harrison get in contact with you and.. Keep an eye on you. All of those sessions are confidential, even from me, but I'm just glad they take place.It is unfortunate that yes, I am a man, and yes you technically work for me as a part of this expedition. But believe me, if I get so much as a whiff of anybody trying it on, any department heads, soldiers... Fee interrupted.

Everyone, so far, has been ok. My gut is pretty good at determining threats. Maybe that's how I managed when we found the Ancient base. She let Conway continue.

Fiona and Aear exited the General's Office and Chicago gave it a minute before she stood from the seat she'd been waiting in. She hadn't had the occasion to be in the presence of the two of them for any huge length of time and so, didn't really know much about them, but she did know that the General had already seen a number of people before her today and it wasn't even lunch time yet. The whole thing was bound to be a handful at times.

Roo poked her head through the door into Conway's office and knocked to draw his attention to his next visitor before entering and taking a seat. " 'Morning sir."

"Yes, Sir. Let's go, Aear. I can show you the chair I want to borrow from Doc Harrison for my office..." Fee stood up and dragged Aear along behind her. The old General smiled, those two were quite the pair. He'd keep an eye on their progress over the next few months. Checking his watch, Jason Conway was surprised to see the time approaching 1100 hours. Still, no rest for the wicked. Running through his mental checklist he'd seen the SM-2 C.O, Chambers the new combat engineer, Miss Yagami the technician and then spent some time with Charter and Maccafferty. With 10 minutes set aside for each appointment, he was just about ahead of schedule still. Conway looked at the next file at the top of the neat, left hand pile, ah the SM-1 Commanding Officer, knock knock, right on schedule.

"Morning Sir" came a voice from the doorway.
"Major Chicago Eastlyn, good morning! Please, take a seat." He said smiling and gestured to one of the two chairs on the other side of the desk. Eastlyn looked smart in her neat, crisp uniform as she strode into the room with the authoritative air that her role gave her. Eastlyn had been gifted a command role, or was it a burden? She was responsible for the flagship team on Meropis. The best of the best... of the best. As she made herself comfortable, or as comfortable as anybody could be in front of an air force General, he placed her file in front of him and opened the cover. Skimming the first page he looked up to her,
"So, is all well? I trust you've settled in nicely on Meropis..."

Chicago returned his smile with one of her own - that was one thing she'd never had stomped out of her, if someone smiled at her she always had one of her own to send right back to 'em. Smiling was contagious for her. Roo settled herself in one of the chairs and got comfortable. Yes, Conway was an Air Force General, but they'd already been through their fair share of scuffles together and she felt like they were building up quite the good rapport.

Her shoulders shrugged in the casual way she often did (her Australian side shining through), and shook her head slightly. "I'm all good, sir. It's definitely a change, going from Cheyenne Mountain to here, but...well, I guess I'm luckier than most in that I'm from the original boatload, you know? I've had longer to make the transition, accustom and adjust myself." Even though she hadn't been in command of SM-1 from the get-go, Roo was part of the first group of people gated over for assignment to Meropis for the forseeable future - an "original" settler, if you will. The major took a minute to regard Conway before continuing. "In saying that though, it's possible it goes both ways I suppose. I could be the first one to go loopy." Chicago cracked a grin at that - she wouldn't be doing her lolly anytime soon if she had any hand in it.

Chicago seemed pretty relaxed now that the meeting had gotten started. In a way, Conway was relieved to see a familiar face,
"I'm all good, sir. It's definitely a change, going from Cheyenne Mountain to here, but...well, I guess I'm luckier than most in that I'm from the original boatload, you know? I've had longer to make the transition, accustom and adjust myself. In saying that though, it's possible it goes both ways I suppose. I could be the first one to go loopy."
Said Major Eastlyn. Conway nodded with a smirk on his face. His memories drifted back to those tenuous first few moments here in the city almost four months ago now. He glanced down at his left arm and back up at Chicago, conveying a silent thank you for the time she'd helped dig him out of the rubble and she'd been there when they'd been attacked by the Etruscans. Woefully unprepared, they had taken a beating and lost a few good men. But that wouldn't happen again, they would be ready next time. Conway was grateful for Chicago's reports as well, they'd helped his case a long way against the IOA recently, an alien attack, an act of war, it didn't just get brushed under the carpet.

"I have to say Major, and I'm sure you'll agree, this city continues to surprise us. I mean, we fully expected not to find her so the fact that most of the city is buried doesn't concern me too much. The condition it was left in, well... That has been an ongoing concern and something we've done a lot of work around as I'm sure you've seen." He turned a page in her file, "Ah yes, SM-1. Could you..." His attention was temporarily distracted by something in the file, he thought nothing of it and closed the case, "Could you give me a run down on your new team members? How are they faring?" Placing the file on the right hand pile he continued, "I understand that Zachary Acker has chosen to take his leave following the incident on Earth with the Cult?"

The major merely gave a minute nod of her head and a smile – she'd always help out to the best of her ability, there was no way that she couldn't. It's just how she was wired.

Ahhh her team. The thought of Ahrima and Maggie trying to get along on the flight to Iraq brought a smirk to her lips. ”What a bunch of crazy kids,” she said with a small chuckle. ”Far as I can tell they're doing fine, all things considered. There was some resistance in the beginning with Maggie as you well know, but she really is making an effort. I think she might think that I haven't noticed, but I have. Anyway, I want to try and have a chat with them all in the next couple of days.. it's really important to me that we keep the unit strong and close-knit.”

"I have to say Major, and I'm sure you'll agree, this city continues to surprise us. I mean, we fully expected not to find her so the fact that most of the city is buried doesn't concern me too much. At the mention of Zach, Roo felt her stomach sink. It had come as a blow, his decision to withdraw from Meropis and head back to Earth, even though she more than understood why he'd made the call. Her gaze averted from the General himself to an uninteresting place over his shoulder on the wall and her expression darkened a fraction as she allowed the mission to flash through her mind, keeping her silent for a few moments. "Can't say that I blame him, in all honesty.." She shook her head ever so slightly, right hand cradling her left wrist as she subconsciously ran her thumb along the picture that lay on her skin - a nervous tic she'd never noticed. "Of all the missions to be his first, it was that one. So much went wrong - so much that I couldn't control, it was like Murphy's law kicked in the minute we landed in Iraq. I know...I know that it could have been so much worse than it was, and I suppose for that I should be thankful." Thoughts of Jackson's friend Tariq and the soldiers in the vanguard vehicle thrashed about her mind. Chicago returned to her gaze to Conway, though it wasn't as soft and casual as it had been before. ”I should be thankful, but I'm not. Not really. I'm just...mad. I'm really, really angry.”

This was a special moment for Conway, he needed Chicago to get this off her chest, to off-load the unbearable pressures that she'd been under for the last fortnight. The idea, in Jason's mind, was that she walked back out of the office door as strong and fearless a leader as she had been when she walked in. Nobody else but Conway and Eastlyn needed to know how much the last mission had affected her team. And affected them it had, Zach had a fractured disc in his spine and heck knows how much mental damage, he'd chosen to stay on Earth rather than travel back to Meropis.
"Of all the missions to be his first, it was that one." Major Eastlyn opened up, "So much went wrong - so much that I couldn't control, it was like Murphy's law kicked in the minute we landed in Iraq. I know... I know that it could have been so much worse than it was, and I suppose for that I should be thankful. I should be thankful, but I'm not. Not really. I'm just... Mad. I'm really, really angry.”

The General had read the mission reports, some detailed, some... Not so much. He knew what had gone down in those caves, the incredible stress the team were put under knowing that the entire human race was just moments away from destruction. But then, wasn't that just another day in the life for a gate team? He nodded to himself,
"We won't dwell on it Major. Just know that you and your team bailed us out of the proverbial, and that won't be forgotten... You have my word." He signed and leaned back in his chair, "Quite frankly we're damn lucky you were around. A few years ago and we'd have had the likes of SG-1, 3 or 5 to swoop in and deal with that before it got as bad as it did. Nowadays they're too busy either mopping up the former followers of the Ori or conducting diplomatic trade relations left, right and center." He was beginning to feel like a war veteran, moaning about how good things used to be, "Hell, two months ago we had Atlantis on Earth, we would've recalled Sheppard's team to back you up and..." He decided that he'd probably made his point by now and cut his speech short.

Conway leaned forward again,
"I want you to know Major, you're doing a great job. Keep up the moral and look after your team. We won't be replacing Zach, sadly the I.O.A has deemed that the four of you will be enough to operate as our flagship team." He kept eye contact with Chicago for a few moments before opening the top drawer on his desk. He withdrew a small paper file, held together by a paper-clip, and placed it on the desk.
"I need you to take a look at this. Doctor Black has been busy trawling through the data on the ancient database regarding Lillith. He found something we'd be interesting in finding out a little more about." He smiled and slid the file across the desk toward Eastlyn, "It's your next mission."

Roo offered the General a thankful look. She knew he wouldn't break her confidence and she could leave the same way she had entered - unwavering and brave, strong enough to lead the flagship team of their exploration.

Eastlyn flipped open the file, and was surprised to see a photograph right on top of the papers within. She picked it up from the folder and took a good look at it to make sure she was seeing it properly before looking across at Conway with a smirk. "Dinosaurs? Really?" Her eyes were drawn back to the photo in her hands. It was...incredible, to say the least. Jackson would have a field day. An incredulous laugh escaped her. "This is..amazing, to be frank, sir." The major felt the remaining tension in her shoulders lift slowly. It was a welcome relief from the burden she had carried around the city the last few days. "I'm 99% certain that I'm not, but I feel like I'm being Punk'd right now" she said with a grin. "I'm sure you could've found somewhere to hide Ashton Kutcher, resourceful Air Force General such as yourself."
And just like that, she let everything snap back to normal. Or, as normal as she could continue to pretend it was until she actually felt normal again. She was good like that, a veritable rubber band.

Flipping the picture over, she cast her gaze over the next page in the folder, taking a look at the small amount of information they had. Leaning back in her chair, she took the folder with her, still interesting in perusing the contents. "So what do the dinosaurs have to do with Lillith?"

"Dinosaurs? Really?" Chicago allowed a laugh to escape, Jason smiled - it certainly was a bit bizarre. The MALP had picked up images of a curious looking Velicorapter peering into the camera. The images the U.A.V they'd sent as a follow up? Well, they were just simply breathtaking. Pterodactyls, large T-Rex like creatures and something with a very long neck breaching the canopy of the forest. 
"This is..amazing, to be frank, sir. I'm 99% certain that I'm not, but I feel like I'm being Punk'd right now. I'm sure you could've found somewhere to hide Ashton Kutcher, resourceful Air Force General such as yourself."

"I assure you Major, this is not a trick. This is one of those missions that only come around once in a lifetime." He said, beaming a smile across the desk.
"So what do the dinosaurs have to do with Lilith?"

"Well..." Conway began, "The database here on Meropis is huge, and we've only just gotten around to processing some of the gate addresses. This one suggests there's an ancient lab hidden within a rock formation. A lab, used of course, by Lilith." He sat back in the chair at this point and sighed, "Given the events back on Earth and what we found on that ancient data recorder, it is vitally important that we gather as much information on this ancient as we can."

His gaze drifted to a point beyond Chicago's shoulder, the stresses of running an outpost on the other side of the universe that had immediate implications on all those back at home they - well, they could take their toll occasionally. Snapping back to attention he asked the Major a question,
"You're the leader of SM-1. You'll be taking your team; Evans, Ahrima and Maggie of course. Have you given any thought to our new accomplice, Albus Mylan?" Before she could answer he added, "You'll have a team of marines with you to back you up should anything go wrong... But, I've got a good feeling about the man."
Eastlyn gave her answer to the General who further added,
"Anybody else you'd wish to consider joining you on this one? The call is yours, unless something comes up back here in the city but..." Another sigh, he picked up his pen and tapped it on the desk, "Achilles insisted on running a training day for all base personnel. Says there's nothing that builds team spirit quite like a bit of fast-rope rappelling down the side of ancient building." A smirk flashed across the General's face. He, being in the position that he was, was not too sure about taking part in this absurd idea of fun.
