Meropis
At least they'd taken the Jumpers, Michael thought. It would have been a heck of a walk if they had gone it on foot, not to mention all these bags and the various bits of scientific equipment that they all claimed they needed. Doctor Black had just brought an ancient scanner and a standard issue digital tablet with him on this one. He looked around the crowded jumper, thankful he had managed to stake out a seat in the corner against the bulkhead door, ensuring he was first out when they landed. The team had been sent with two jumpers full of scientists and marines under the command of Captain Jones to go and find out what was in an abandoned lab on the other side of the neighboring forest. It had been giving off a feint yet odd energy signature ever since they had first arrived in orbit and now the General had finally given clearance for a team to check it out.
Part of the reason for the mission clearance was actually because of Dr. Black and his research in the ancient database. The other part was, of course, to get the scientists out of the way and allow the combat engineers to do their work and re-stabilize some of the damaged sections of the city after the battle of Meropis. During his research, Michael realized that the lab was a sort of workshop for an ancient named Lillith. He had briefed the team before they set off and as far as he could tell it was used by said ancient and kept secret from the main population for a number of years. She (at least he assumed it was a she) would conduct experiments in genetics, DNA and ascension enhancement in lower life forms. It looked as though the lab was shut down when the others found out about it, on account of her experiments not having been approved by the city's high council.
He turned to a young marine sat next to him who appeared to be fiddling with his rifle, smiling at him he decided to spark up a conversation, "You must have just transferred in with the new batch during the large change-over recently I assume?"
"Yes Sir indeed. This is pretty freakin' cool. My first time in an ancient puddle jumper."
"Yeah, they are that. How are you finding it?"
"Well, it;s okay, but to tell you the truth I got a little excited when I heard about the black hawk being imported." The Sun Tzu had ferried over a black hawk helicopter on it's return along with a couple of hundred gallons of aviation fuel. The helicopter was being kept in one the empty spaces in the Jumper bay and was being reassembled this morning as the team left.
"I'm guessing that with the limited amount of fuel and the dense amount of forest around us that the helicopter will probably only be used for search and rescue situations around the city. Besides, these things are very environmentally friendly and they do quite well in a pinch." He said, patting the main hull of the Jumper. The soldier simply smiled and returned to his weapon checks. The pilot slowed the Jumper down and with a soft thud it gently landed at their intended RV point. Michael reached up and hit the door open button as soon as he could, keen to step out and feel the fresh air on his face. Right, he thought. Let's get this show on the road.
